Countdown to the Airlie Beach Festival of Sport begins!

The Airlie Beach Festival of Sport is one step closer with registrations now open for all events across the fun-filled weekend.

From 29-30 August, Airlie Beach will be buzzing when athletes and spectators alike descend on the foreshore to be a part of this annual event. The Festival of Sport this year includes the Kidzpower Junior Triathlon, Graphic House Open Water Swim and Team Sprint, the Hamilton Island Beach Volleyball Challenge, and the main event, the Fish D'Vine 11th Annual Airlie Beach Triathlon.

The triathlon has become a high-profile race amongst triathletes Australiawide and this year a number of international champions will be lining up against the locals for what will be a spectacular race.

Race Director Wendy Downes said, "Every year the event continues to grow and this yearwe expect another record-breaking number of athletes across all events.

I have had enquiries from all states and as far as Canada about our race, possibly due to the fact that it is perfectly timed to suit competitors in the 2009 World Triathlon Championships on the Gold Coast 2 weeks later.

As a last hit-out before this major event, I have no doubt it will be hotly contested by some of the best triathletes in the world."

The Festival of Sport is open to people of all ages and ability and team entries are also encouraged for both the junior and senior triathlons.

"If you don't feel you are fit enough to do the entire triathlon, get two friends and do it as a team. It is a fantastic race to take part in and what better way to enjoy it than with friends to encourage each other?" Ms Downes commented.

For more information or to enter any event in the Airlie Beach Festival of Sport, head to the Whitsunday Triathlon Club's website, www.whitsundaytriclub.com or phone 0418 768 493.
